From the Calvary Leadership Team-

Since the initiation of the new schedule in March of 2009, Calvary has seen significant growth and health. The projected strategy for gaining more adult SS space has been successful and our current numbers reflect growth and expansion.  In addition, the worship services have remained strong and the second service continues to see a significant amount of visitors.  In the first few months of this year, our Wednesday evening ministries have seen unparalleled numbers with the youth group hitting the 100 mark and the children’s ministry overflowing into the children’s lobby.  A numerical glance at the Wednesday evening trend puts us regularly at the 350 mark – an exceptional indication of our health.

Based on the strength of our ministries, the Leadership Team has continued to evaluate the facility needs that confront us, and we are aware of specific issues in the children, youth and adult areas. First, Kidzboro is using the children’s lobby for its worship and rally, thus limiting their growth as well as restricting the use of the lobby for general purposes.  Salvation Station is currently using the youth room in the first hour, but is having to reset the stage area each week to prepare youth Sunday School.  Our Children’s Ministry Director, April Smith, continues to creatively build the ministry and use the space that is available, but we know that the current options must be temporary.

We also recognize that the youth ministry is close to maximizing their available space; and for some time, we’ve dealt with the issue of sound emanating from the Youth Worship time on Wednesday evenings throughout adjoining rooms - as far as the choir room, offices, library and children’s lobby.

To address these needs we believe additional facilities are needed and we will be providing information over the next two weeks detailing a two phase design that accommodates these needs in the following order of priority:

Phase One: Children’s Promise - An expansion of the children’s wing that includes additional classrooms, office area, storage, a large assembly room for Kidzboro and Salvation Station; and also a retrofitting of the current children’s classrooms with a fire system upgrade that meets state code for preschool use.

Phase Two: An extension behind the youth room that will serve as a new youth area and which will eventually provide a bridge to another educational building in the future.  The new youth room will double the size of the current space, which will then be converted into additional adult Sunday School rooms.

An immediate question arises: How can we do this with such a tight budget and the struggling economy?  The Leadership Team does not believe the church should take on additional debt or refinance our loan; we believe this should be a cash project above and beyond our current budget.  Our commitment is to “build it when we get it.”

We have a tentative estimate for Phase One that puts the children’s wing addition in the mid $60 per square foot range.  Allowing for other costs such as architectural, civil, fees, insurance, etc… we anticipate the first phase to be under $400,000.  Dependant upon the financial response of our congregation we will move forward with the first phase of the project or continue fundraising until we have received the amount needed – “we will build it when we get it.” After Phase One has been completed or when additional money comes in, we will then address the youth area as a second phase.

We ask you to join us in praying and working toward a future that meets the need of our church and especially provides for our children.
